Dead Journal is a journal hosting service that is noted for being the first blog-system spinoff of
LiveJournal. It uses the same code as LJ and the founders of it and LJ personally know each other; DJ is still owned by its creator, Frank Precissi. It is usually abbreviated DJ. The code is
open source.
Dead Journal was created as a parody of LJ (with the permission of LJ's creator) and is now a haven for people who have been banned from LJ. As a result, the atmosphere on DJ tends to be more sarcastic, abrasive, satiric and less patient than on LJ, and the content is more mature. For this reason, many of its users actually use a different service such as LJ as their main blog, but also have a DJ as a back-up or as a repository of material that might violate LJ rules.
Deadjournal allows threaded commenting on individual entries and the ability to create memories (categorized links), not only of one's own entries, but also of the entries of other users on the same service. It also supports many of the same functions that LJ does, such as
Communities,
friendslists, and reads
RSS∞ feeds. DJ also still uses invite codes, which means that you must get a special code from an existing DJ user in order to create a new one.
