Doctor Who

Doctor Who started as a Saturday afternoon science fiction, educational programme for children in 1963. The intention was that the time travelling 'Doctor' would visit historical periods, and educate the young painlessly. The Daleks arrived in the second serial of the first series, and the show never looked back. It ran continuously for twenty-six years, until 'suspension' in 1989. There have been three Doctor Who spin off films, Doctor Who and the Daleks in 1965, and Daleks Invasion Earth 2150 AD in 1967, where the Doctor was played by Peter Cushing, these films were reworkings of existing story arcs and not generally regarded as part of canon; and Doctor Who the Movie 1996, with Paul McGann as the eighth Doctor.

After a sixteen year hiatus, Doctor Who is airing once more in new series from 2005, created by Russell T Davies, with Christopher Eccleston in the title role, and Billie Piper as his companion Rose Tyler. Eccleston stepped down at the end of the 2005 series, replaced by the tenth incarnation of the Doctor, played by David Tennant
