What's a Wiki Name?/I can't register because it says my username isn't a Wiki Name!

Will you register me with a non-Wiki Name, please?

No. Eventually I'll find the time to play with the code and get it to accept non-wikinames, but not for now.

What is the purpose of The Directorium?

To provide a structured, searchable and easily updatable directory of fannish sites for nearly all fandoms and media (fanfic, fanart, vids, zines, archives, screencaps, scripts, etc.).

How do I link to The Directorium?

Link to http://directorium.org Link graphics will be available here. (Send me an email with the any graphics you wish to contribute and I'll post them.)

Where do I start?

Read Getting Started.

How do I add a listing for a site?

Follow the instructions for adding a page.

Can I add a new fandom?

Certainly. Just please be sure to try to include the information requested in the question below. If you don't understand how to create a new fandom page, feel free to send me the info and I'll create the page.

When creating a new fandom page, please do not include articles (a, an, the) at the beginning of a title as part of the page name. For example, the actual page name for the The Man from U.N.C.L.E. page is Man From UNCLE. That way fandoms will sort correctly. (Articles for foreign titles—e.g. La Femme Nikita—are fine.)

What information should be included on fandom pages?

Please include (at a minimum) the following information on a fandom's main page: abbreviations used to designate the fandom, the full names (no abbreviations) of the main characters, and pairing abbreviations. Check The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Keen Eddie pages for examples of how this should be handled. The Fandom Template is available to get you started.

Can I add a new category?

Please don't. Email or post your category suggestion and I'll decide whether or not to add it.

How do I know what category or categories to use on a page?

Read over the Meta Categories page to see how categories are used on The Directorium.

Can I add a listing for someone else's site?

Certainly, if that author hasn't already created a page or requested that her site not be listed. If the author has already created a page, please do not create a duplicate page.

Part of the reason for choosing a wiki to run this directory is because it allows everyone to update pages, which means that if a link is out of date and you find the current location, you can easily update the listing to reflect that change, thereby keeping the directory up-to-date.

Please be courteous and refrain from making inane changes to someone else's listing page, especially if they own the site being listed. A courteous way to let other users know that a URL has changed on a fan's personal page would be to leave a comment with the updated URL. (This is the only way you can let other folks know that information has updated if the fan has restricted access to update their personal page on The Directorium.)

How do I add a picture to a page?

Include the image coding as listed on the formatting instructions page, then send me an email with the picture file and the page URL you want it added to, and I'll get it up.

Please do not hotlink to a picture on another site unless the site is your own!

What subject matter is allowed?

Any and all mediums (fanfic, fanart, vids, zines, etc.) and fandoms (slash, gen and het), with the exceptions of RPS/RPF and shota/chan/child pornography.

Are RPS and RPF listings allowed?

No, real person slash (RPS) and real person fiction (RPF) are not allowed to be listed as contents on a site's page. That does not mean that if you have both fictional slash and RPS on your site that you are not allowed to list your site. You can, you just cannot make mention of the RPS.

A warning will be issued to those who do include RPS in their listings and the information pertaining to the RPS will be removed. If the information is then reinserted, the person who added it will be permanently banned from posting to the site.

This is a term of my host's TOS, and I'd appreciate cooperation on this point.

Are shota/chan listings allowed?

No.

People who add such listings will be permanently banned from posting to the site.

This is a term of my host's TOS, and I'd appreciate cooperation on this point.

Some dos and don'ts

Don't copy information directly from other sites. Not even cast lists or filmographies from IMDb. That particular collection of information is theirs. (Copyright and all that, you know.) So don't do it.

If that were all the information we wanted to find, we could easily go to the IMDb page for that show or actor and find the info there (which is why we include a direct link to the IMDb page on fandom or actor pages). But there's absolutely no sense in reinventing the wheel.

Besides, that's not the point of The Directorium. The point is to gather all the information and make the connections between shows and actors that we want to make, not what the mainstream thinks we want to know.

Do have fun. *g*

Don't worry about making every single link off of a page you're just now creating another live page full of information as soon as you put the link up. It's ok to leave it with the little dashed underline saying the page isn't done yet for a while, it reallly doesn't all have to be done in one day. The information will get filled in in pieces, sometimes little, sometimes big. It's ok. *vbg*

Do holler if you have any questions at all. Or if you have a suggestion. I'm totally not a scary person, I promise. (I may not be able to get back to you right away, since I can't access my fannish email from work any more, but I will get back to you.) Whether you email me or post it on the questions page, I will see your question or suggestion or comment, and I will respond, I promise. I won't bite. *g*

Does a single-fandom archive need its own page, since it likely wouldn't be linked from any page except that of the fandom to which it belongs?

Yes, please make a separate page for all archives, whether they're single- or multi-fandom. Those pages should be the only ones in the Category Archive category, and not the main fandom pages. That way people can go to the archive category and find only those sites that are archives.

It also keeps the need to find and update links for sites to a minimum. For example, say you've got three people who maintain an archive plus the main fandom page, and all four of those pages have external links to the archive in question.

Now, say the archive changes its URL (maybe they got a new dedicated domain name). Every one of those pages that linked to the archive would then have to be updated with the new link. (Which isn't a problem with only a few pages, but any more than that and it becomes really time consuming.)

However, if all four of those pages had linked to the archive's internal page, which was the only place that the actual URL was posted, then only one page would need to be updated, saving much time and frustration at link rot.

How do I delete a page?

You don't. Email me with the link or page name and why you think it needs to be deleted and I'll do it.
