Summary info
The Lord of the Rings is the collective name for a trilogy of novels by
J.R.R. Tolkien, comprised of
The Fellowship of the Ring,
The Two Towers, and
The Return of the King. These three books, originally intended to be one epic story, are part of a larger world created by Tolkien; other related works include
The Hobbit,
The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, and the posthumous
The Silmarillion,
Unfinished Tales and the History of Middle-earth series, edited by Tolkien's son Christopher.
The Lord of the Rings is the story of Frodo Baggins, an ordinary hobbit who lives an uneventful life until he realizes he possesses the One Ring: an object that, if found, could restore power to the vanquished dark lord Sauron and end freedom in Middle-earth. In order to destroy the Ring, Frodo journeys with eight companions to Sauron's stronghold, Mordor, to return it to the fire in which it was made.
The Lord of the Rings became an icon of geek culture in the mid-twentieth century and was adapted as a
BBC radio drama (1981) and as an animated film by
Ralph Bakshi (1978). But it was
Peter Jackson's trilogy of films that exploded Tolkien's popularity and brought it to a more mainstream audience. The movies garnered multiple Academy Awards each, with
The Return of the King (2003) sweeping its 11 Oscar nominations, which included Best Picture.
