Stargate: SG-1

IMDb

1997-current US television show.

SG-1 is a spinoff of the 1994 movie starring Kurt Russell and James Spader as Colonel O'Neill and Doctor Daniel Jackson. The premise is fundamentally unchanged, save that now the gate in question can "dial" planets other than the one planet from the film (Abydos).

O'Neill, played in the series by Richard Dean Anderson, comes out of retirement (again) to join the Stargate program and lead its premier exploratory team, "SG-1". Dr. Jackson, played in the series by Michael Shanks, joins up after his wife is abducted by the series' Bad Guys, the Gou'ald, of which the film's Bad Guy, Ra, had been a member. (The running nemesis for the show's initial seasons was gou'ald in general, but specifically the g'ouald Apophis (played by Peter Williams). Others come to the forefront in later seasons.)

Joining O'Neill and Jackson on the SG-1 team are Captain (Doctor) Samantha Carter, played by Amanda Tapping, and the Jaffa Teal'C, played by Christopher Judge, a former warrior in the service of Apophis.

Other characters of import include General George Hammond, played by Don S. Davis, Dr. Janet Frasier, played by Teryl Rothery, Jonas Quinn, played by Corin Nemec, General Jacob Carter, played by Carmen Argenziano, Bra'tac, played by Tony Amendola, Major Paul Davis (Colin Cunningham), Colonel Maybourne (Tom McBeath), Sgt Siler (Dan Shea), Sgt Walter Davis/Sgt Walter Harriman (Gary Jones), and Skaara, played by Alexis Cruz.

Gou'ald are essentially a parasitic race, who take over "host" bodies. They like human (aka Tauri) hosts, ostensibly because they're easy to heal. They have access to advanced technology apparently created by another (now-gone) race referred to as the Ancients. The Gou'ald posed as gods in Earth's past, abducting primitive races and seeding them throughout the universe (and stargate network) for slave labor and host bodies. Jaffa are their servant race, who, as adults, carry larval gou'ald in an abdominal pouch, and in return receive enhanced strength and other capabilities. Take away a Jaffa's embedded larvae and you deal a crippling blow to their immune system.

Initially a Showtime original series, the show ultimately moved to the Sci-Fi Channel. Information on seasons 1 through 7 may be found at MGM's Stargate SG-1 website, and information on seasons 1 through (current) may be found at the Sci-Fi Channel's website for the show.

Season Highlights

This includes spoilers, but hopefully not dire ones.

Season One: The team is formed, gets out in the universe and starts poking around. We meet the Asgard, enemies of the Gou'ald, who seem nice but a bit asexual, and Hathor, a Gou'ald queen. Not so nice. Not so asexual, either. We also meet the Tollan and the Nox, advanced races who want little to do with Earth and "primitive humans".

Season Two: Earth gets an in with other Jaffa resisting the "false gods" (Gou'ald). We also meet the Tok'ra, basically the good-guy gou'alds, though they hate it when you call them that.

Season Three: Alternate realities exist, as does the very special offspring of Apophis and Dr. Jackson's taken wife Sha're, and a new Bad Guy, the replicators.

Season Four: The USAF isn't the only one fielding stargate teams. We meet the Aschen, another advanced race, but not as far out of Earth's league as the others.

Season Five: We find out there are human-like beings who've "ascended" to another plane of existence. We also meet the species that served as hosts to the gou'ald before humans. More of the replicators, Asgard, Tollans, rebel Jaffa, and quite possibly the funniest SG-1 episode ever, Wormhole X-Treme.

Season Six: Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) sits this season out. Jonas Quinn, played by Corin Nemec joins SG-1. We learn more about the dependence of Jaffa on their larvae. The replicators do some serious evolving, and things at HQ get political.

Season Seven: Daniel Jackson rejoins the team and Jonas Quinn goes home. Apophis as key personal gou'ald nemesis for the team has been replaced by Anubis and Baal. More on the impact of the Jaffa rebellion and their Achilles' heel of gou'ald larvae dependence, and the Ancients may have Lost a City.

Season Eight: SG Command has a new boss.

Season Nine: Farscape's Ben Browder joins the cast.
